Marriage And Business

Why Your Business Is Like A Marriage

by Andy Pitt on February 3, 2011

My wife Penny and I celebrated 20 years of marriage this week. While thinking back over those 20 years it struck me that there are similarities between a marriage and a business.

One of the first things to happen in a marriage is the vows. One of these is “’til death us do part”. How many people make a commitment like this when they start their business? If more people did and stuck to it then there would be a lot more successful people in this world.
In the beginning we are so happy to be in our new marriage/business. We think life is great and it will be forever.

Then comes the first argument/set back and we realise that like everything in life we need to work at this to keep it on track and achieve the successful marriage/business that we were looking for in the beginning.

Unfortunately, too many people bail out of their business too early, just because the going got a bit tough. Don’t give in! Stay the course. Enjoy the good times and work through the not so good times. In the 20 years we have been married there have been times when things have been difficult, did we give in? NO, we worked things out and it made us a stronger couple.

Here’s to the next 20 years!
