Why It is Important to Learn from Your Mistakes

by Andy Pitt on March 16, 2011

There are two reasons why we were taught history in school. The first reason was that it was interesting to learn about past events, and the second reason, which happens to be the most important one, is so that we can learn from the past. To be more precise, history is essential for helping us to learn from other people’s mistakes. While this approach is very effective at helping us to stay healthy and successful in mind and spirit, it will never be enough to truly keep us on the right path. The other ingredient that is just as essential is to learn from your mistakes. In other words, you have to make mistakes in order to learn something.

Now when you look at it this way, it does sound strange, as what the sentence is saying is that you have to be intentionally destructive in order to get something positive from it. I want you to really think about this, because it can be misleading. In order to learn from your mistakes, it does not mean that you have to intentionally go out and do something wrong. That would just be foolish. Instead, this mindset is allowing you to not be afraid of facing the unknown. In addition, it is about facing the unknown with a good amount of common sense and caution, and it is the type of unknown that will help you to achieve something great and positive in your life.

By taking this approach, you will almost always make mistakes. However, as long as you have the intention to learn from your mistakes, you will find that this hands-on experience can be a far more effective learning tool than if you were to learn the same lesson through someone else’s mistakes, as these lessons are usually more difficult to forget. Keep in mind however that both ways of learning are still crucial in truly achieving success, because there are certain mistakes that can be lethal or just plain difficult to correct, and it is these mistakes that you should try to learn from someone else’s actions rather than your own.

This is a very powerful mindset to have, as it allows you to stay positive when things can go wrong in your life. Instead of seeing these negative occurrences as being a bad omen, you are instead using them as a way to get more insight to yourself and life in general. This in turn will ensure that you are able to remain on the right path to success, and more importantly, it will help you to keep that success in definitely.

History – No mystery unlike the future, not a gift like the present, and sometimes you learn what is most important, there is a good God because you shouldn’t be here.
